Black Stars winger Christian Atsu died in February 2023; the funeral was attended by new Black Stars coach Chris Hughton.
Hughton and his first assistant George Boateng attended the service on March 17, 2023, at the State House in Accra.
Prior to his official introduction on March 20, the former Tottenham Hotspur manager traveled to Ghana to attend his father Willy Hughton’s funeral.
Upon his arrival, he went to the funeral to pay his respects to the deceased football player who perished in Turkey due to an earthquake.
The burial was attended by a number of former Black Stars, including Samuel Osei Kuffour, Stephen Appiah, John Mensah, Sulley Muntari, John Paintsil, Richard Kingston, Augustine Arhinful, Prince Tagoe, and a few others.

Together with other dignitaries, former Togo national team captain Emmanuel Adebayor arrived at the ongoing service alongside former president John Dramani Mahama.
The funeral service was attended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his deputy Mahamudu Bawumia, as well as other government leaders, local and foreign athletes, and bureaucrats.
